Position Summary:

The Freight Rate Specialist is responsible for obtaining, evaluating, and managing freight rate quotations from carriers, freight forwarders, and logistics providers to ensure cost-effective shipping solutions. This role involves negotiating rates, analyzing cost structures, and working closely with logistics, procurement, and operations teams to optimize transportation expenses while maintaining service level agreements (SLAs) and meeting business needs.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Obtain Freight Rates:

    • Solicit and gather freight rate quotes from a variety of carriers, including trucking companies, air, sea, and rail freight providers.
    • Review and evaluate rate quotes for different shipping methods, destinations, and timelines.
    • Ensure that all freight rates are up-to-date and reflect the latest market trends and pricing strategies.

  2. Rate Negotiation:

    • Negotiate with carriers to secure the most competitive rates for both domestic and international shipments.
    • Work with internal teams and vendors to adjust rates and find cost-effective solutions for urgent or special shipments.
    • Develop long-term relationships with carriers and freight forwarders to ensure favorable terms and discounts.

  3. Cost Analysis and Optimization:

    • Analyze freight rates, transportation costs, and shipping patterns to identify areas for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
    • Provide data-driven recommendations to the logistics or supply chain teams for optimizing shipping routes and methods.
    • Assist in the preparation of transportation budgets and monitor actual freight costs versus budgeted amounts.

  4. Market Research:

    • Stay informed on current market trends, changes in fuel surcharges, tariff changes, and other external factors that may impact freight rates.
    • Monitor and report on industry developments, new carriers, and transportation regulations that may influence pricing.

  5. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Collaborate closely with logistics, sales, and supply chain teams to understand shipping requirements and align freight rates with organizational goals.
    • Communicate freight rate information and updates to relevant teams to ensure alignment on cost-saving initiatives and shipping strategies.
    • Provide customer service support for internal stakeholders regarding rate inquiries or discrepancies.

  6. Compliance and Process Improvement:

    • Ensure that all freight rate contracts comply with corporate policies, legal requirements, and industry standards.
    • Continuously review and improve processes to ensure the efficiency and accuracy of rate negotiation and procurement procedures.
